EDITORIAL

Editorial

Dear Reader,

Dear friends of the European Journal of Endocrinology,

Dear colleagues,

The Editorial Board of the European Journal of Endocrinology (EJE) wishes you a happy New Year in 2008, full of health, success and luck!

During the past year 2007, there have been a number of changes to the journal. EJE no longer publishes experimental articles and instead focuses on clinical and translational endocrinology only. The reason for this decision was to establish EJE as the clinical and translational journal of the European Society of Endocrinology, complementing ESE's other official journals (Journal of Endocrinology, Journal of Molecular Endocrinology and Endocrine-Related Cancer). We strongly encourage you to submit your best clinical and translational manuscripts to the European Journal of Endocrinology and assure you of a fast and constructive review process and decision making.

In 2007, Prof. Paolo Beck-Peccoz finished a 9-year term at the helm of EJE. We owe him tremendous gratitude for his achievement in leading the journal out of its infancy to a well-established one; its impact factor has now stabilised above 3, the latest figure being 3.145. Prof. Beck-Peccoz has provided invaluable service to the European Journal of Endocrinology and demonstrated outstanding leadership as the Editor-in-Chief. He formed a splendid team of editors, who, together with the reviewers, dedicate their time and intellect to serve the needs of the European and wider global endocrine community via this journal. I sincerely wish to thank them all, especially Prof. Beck-Peccoz for their efforts.

BioScientifica, as the publisher, has provided very professional support and has helped us to make the transition to the fully online manuscript processing system now in place for 15 months, as well as in various management aspects of the enterprise and the journal's relationship with the European Society of Endocrinology.

What does the New Year bring for you as the reader of or contributor to, the European Journal of Endocrinology?

  1. Immediate electronic publication (‘Accepted Preprints’): when a manuscript is accepted for publication in EJE, from now on the unformatted manuscript will become electronically published ahead of print on EJE's website within 24 h. They will be citable from the outset using digital object identifiers, and will also be posted on PubMed.
  2. Electronic archive: EJE is currently available online from the July 1997 issue onwards. An initiative has been approved to extend this back through all preceding issues of EJE and its predecessor journal, Acta Endocrinologica, right back to volume 1, issue 1, published in 1948. This will be achieved by retrospective digitisation from the printed copies. The completed electronic archive will become accessible to all institutional subscribers of the journal.
  3. Open Access: some organisations and bodies funding scientific research request that the resulting research paper should immediately become publicly accessible without restriction to subscribers of the publishing journal. EJE has implemented an Open Access publication policy: in return for an Open Access fee the usual 12 months embargo of the article's full text version is waived and the article becomes freely available to the general public immediately on publication, both on the journal's website and on PubMed Central and its clones around the world.

The European Journal of Endocrinology wishes to publish the best clinical and translational endocrine research papers from Europe and elsewhere. If authors, reviewers and editors are willing to support this goal, then the European Journal of Endocrinology should be able to maintain its progress along the successful path that my predecessor, Prof. Beck-Peccoz established. It was with the sentiments of respect and honour that I accepted the challenging task of following him as the Editor-in-Chief of EJE, and I am grateful to my institution, the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, for allowing me to accept this duty.

The best wishes of EJE's Editorial Board go out to you. In this spirit, we ask for your support and help in building a successful future for the European Society of Endocrinology and its flagship journal, the European Journal of Endocrinology.

Yours sincerely

Christian J Strasburger

Editor-in-Chief
