BOOK REPORT

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis; Hormones and Other Therapies

The primary objective of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis; Hormones and Other Therapies is to educate and inform about osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment. The book covers the issues raised during the Workshop on postmenopausal osteoporosis organized in November 2004 in Pisa by the International Menopause Society.

The different topics are well selected and provide essential information about epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In particular, the section regarding the genetic regulation of bone mass provides an up-to-date summary about genes contributing to regulation of bone mass and pathogenesis of fragility fractures.

The novelty for such a text is the inclusion of a detailed chapter on the assessment of bone quality. The diagnostic tools are, thus, completely and deeply described even if a limit of this section may be the lack of a paragraph dedicated to vertebral morphometry.

A strength of the book is certainly represented by the detailed chapters regarding risks and benefits of hormone-replacement therapy evaluated under the light of ‘quality-adjusted life-years’ and the effects on bone tissue of oral contraceptive preparation, transdermal estrogen replacement therapy and very low dose of estrogens. Nevertheless, this section, focused on the therapeutic approach to postmenopausal osteoporosis, would have been fully exhausted if a chapter regarding parathyroid hormone treatment in postmenopausal osteoporosis had been included.

In summary, Postmenopausal Osteoporosis; Hormones and Other Therapies provides an exhaustive picture of the different aspects to be considered when approaching patients with osteoporosis.
